The Student Newspaper of the University of North Carolina at Charlotte Volume XVI, Number 10 Charlotte, North Carolina Thursday, September 4. 1980 Office Space Legislature Tables MotionToOustBlack Students By Chip Wilson Carolina Journal Staff Writer Eighty students jammed into Tues day’s student legislature meeting with the idea that the proposed removal of the Black Student Union offices from the Cone Center would be discussed. However, the topic wasn’t debated. After a presentation by the special Space Allocation committee, the topic was tabled and referred to the legislatures Executive Committee. When questioned why the discus sion over the BSU offices never oc- cured, chairman Joel Gilland said it was a normal procedure for matters concerning office space to be first handled by the executive committee. The move met with scant approval by the blacks who walked out of the room upon hearing no debate would occur. One noticably irritated student ex pressed her disappointment adding, “All through the summer we thought we would hear the topic discussed at this meeting. Now they get off telling us they’re letting a committee handle it. They left us with a false impres tion.” Student Body President Ron Olsen also addressed the legislature and asked for more cooperation between that body and his office. In other action, the legislature: —Set September 15 through 19 as the date nominations would be ac cepted for fall elections. The voting dates will be September 30 and Oc tober!. —Accepted the presdient’s nomina tions of Dave Phillips, Dennis Bunker and William Faquin as the respective Engineering, Commutter and Math/ Science representatives to the legislature. —Voted on designated presidential assistants, until the vote was deter mined to be out of order. The legi slature rules require that all presiden tial assistants are to be approved by the Ways and Means committee. —Appointed Marcia Cafferty to the Student Court. —Named Kim Ray as assistant director of Elections and Publicity. Two resolutions were also proposed by Olsen. The first was one announc es the support of student govern ment for the Student Health Service. The second thanked the athletic department for its basketball ticket distribution plan. The Soccer Team is getting in shape for its annual Four Points Tournament to be held here against UNC-A, UNC-W, and UNC-G. For more informa tion, see page six. Photo By Bob Henderson Classes Overcrowded Resignation Brewing For Years By Frank Cox & Bob Henderson Carolina Journal Staff Writer# Last week Dr. Joseph Schell resign ed a chairman of the math depart ment at UNCC. Although Schell re fused to comment on the matter, Dr. Harold Reiter of the math depart ment did make several remarks about the resignation. ‘‘The Observer left out a lot of vital information regarding the resigna tion,” said Reiter. ‘‘This was not a spur of the moment thing as indicated in the papers; it has been brewing for years.” There is a need for eight or nine full time faculty members to br ing math classes down to a normal teaching load. As it is right now, the department is limping along with the help of part-time positions. Even though the difficulties have been presented to administrators nothing has yet been done about the problem. For the time being the math depart ment is being administered by a com mittee of four elected faculty mem bers. “The Dean of the College of Arts & Sciences will probably try to attempt to fill the position vacated by Schell. He may have some difficulty because no one seems to want the job,” said Reiter. According to Reiter as the class gets larger the quality of the educa ¬ tion gets lower. In one of his classes, Reiter remembers, he had two stu dents sitting on the floor due to lack of seating space. Another member of the math de partment who wished to remain anon ymous said, “In a class I just taught the students had to bring in chairs Inside . . .
